An analog watch shows the current time utilizing hour and minute hands rather than a liquid crystal display that digitally forms arabic numbers. As the clock ticks, the hands move clockwise around the dial indicating the time of day. Analogue is used here as a retronym, meaning that the term was coined to indicate the difference between what was always simply refered to as ‘watch’ and the (then) new digital watches.
Is analog the same as mechanical?
One might expect that analog means ‘without electronics’ – thus ruling out quartz movement. This is not the case. Analog is not the same as mechanical. A mechanical watch is a watch that runs without battery. It’s either hand-winded or automatic.
